ABOUT
The Sunflower House is a Senior and Caregiver Resource Center; it is located inside the Merritt Square Mall. The Caregiver Support Program, which is housed at the Sunflower House, offers respite services, consumable supplies, education, support, training, outreach, and referrals for family caregivers responsible for caring for a loved one age 60 and over.
Each month the Sunflower House offers programming which includes twice weekly chair exercise classes, weekly movies, a caregiver support group, a bereavement support group, brief memory screenings, classes and presentations for caregivers who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia, and presentations on other topics important to seniors and caregivers. The Sunflower House also runs a medical equipment bank with donated wheelchairs, walkers, canes, shower chairs, and bedside commodes.
Beginning in 2012, the Sunflower House will be offering expanded services for caregivers. The Caregiver Support Program will be adding two new components — a Grandparents as Caregivers program and a program designed to help family caregivers move beyond their caregiving years.
Expanded services for the Grandparents program include care management, referrals to available community resources, outreach, support groups, educational presentations, and counseling. The Beyond Caregiving program is designed to help family caregivers transition from the caregiving role to a life beyond caregiving and includes activities such as support groups, educational presentations, and opportunities for social interaction. As part of this program, the Sunflower House will be coordinating day trips and hosting potluck meals and clubs.
